Afghanistan

Afghanistan is one of the world’s poorest countries in the world, having endured decades of war, insecurity and drought. Many of the country's population are affected with lack of access to basic services such as safe water, sanitation, health care and education. UNICEF estimates that nearly 900 children under the age of five die every day in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan has one of the highest population proportion of school-age (7-12yrs) children in the world. The literacy rate in Afghanistan is one of the lowest among developing countries and female literacy is the lowest in the world. According to the education ministry, at least a million girls of school age are not enrolled in school, 35% of the total population of girls.
